The legend of Machim is the story of the potentially first discoverers of Madeira. Indeed, as new and founded historical documents surface, the island was not necessarily first discovered by Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira (the official position). It is a dramatic tale of love and tragedy and is the stuff of local lore.
