Currency
Portugal (and therefore
Madeira and Porto Santo) adopted the Single European Currency in 2002. Everyday
transactions are done in Euros (although prices are also usually shown in
Escudos, the previous national currency, as well). There are cash machines,
accepting international credit and debit cards, on both Madeira and Porto
Santo.
Tipping
Tipping is
optional
- although waiters typically
expect to receive 5%. There is no need to tip taxi drivers, although if you are
happy with the service there is no reason why you shouldnt give them a little
extra.
Emergencies
The emergency telephone
number is 112.
